Seymchan Pallasite Meteorite Pendant Backstory

One day in June 1967, Russian geologist F. Smith A. Mednikov was conducting a field geological survey within the Jasachnaja River basin in the Magadan region of the former Soviet Union. On the bank of a tributary called the Hekandue River, Mednikov discovered the main body of the Seymchan meteorite, weighing an impressive 300 kilograms.

Later, geologist I.H. Markov found an additional 51-kilogram fragment nearby, which, alongside the larger meteorite, was sent to the USSR Academy of Sciences. Initially misclassified as an IIE iron meteorite, the true nature of the Seymchan meteorite was revealed when a German collector acquired a portion in the early 1990s. Upon cutting the specimen, the stunning olivine crystals were discovered, confirming its status as a stony iron meteorite with peridot inclusions.

In 2007, the International Meteorite Society Nomenclature Committee officially reclassified Seymchan as a pallasite, solidifying its position as one of the most remarkable meteorites ever found.
